Hair of the Dog! (Brisbane)

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

For the past 4 or 5 days, I’ve been hanging out in Brisbane at a photography conference called “Hair of the Dog”. It’s a conference run by the Queensland team from the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers. I am proud to be a member!

I didn’t really know what to expect.. but I must say that I was very impressed with that I did encounter! My favourite presenters were Jackie Chan (the photographer) and Barry McCall who is a photographer from Ireland who’s studio is right next to the Guiness brewery in Dublin I believe.

I met lots of cool people.. Todd, Aleyda, Trudie, Tim, David…just to mention a few. There were so many people there who came up to me and said they were blog readers..that was pretty cool.

I had a little talk that I did at the conference…that was pretty nerve racking..but I survived.

Anyhow.. i’m sitting here watching the telethon for the victoria fires and trying to get through to donate some money.. no luck yet. (updated to add - got through..spoke to someone named Lauren and donated $200 on behalf of JDP! Please donate!!!)

Lots of pics coming soon. Be patient with me.. there’s some exciting things in the works.

Christmas!

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

Enjoy a few photos of my Christmas with my family..what a blessing it was!

It was made even richer by having Lauren’s aunt and uncle visit us for Christmas from Kelowna, BC, Canada!

Next post - the Jesh De Rox workshop recap!

P.S. I have something HUGE in the works and it’s going to change the direction of my photography business forever. I really am so excited for this venture and how it’s going to benefit ALL my clients beyond belief.

Rocking the boat

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

I have something very serious to share with you all. I really hope that this rocks your boat, challenges you and makes you question everything you know.
There are some things in life that are trivial. Should we have this ribbon on our invites, or that ribbon? Look, who cares. There are more serious things you probably need to sort out in your life.

You might remember recently I photographed my friend Alex Pullar’s weddding. A while before that I took family photos for his family as his mother Kim had just returned from her first round of chemo and was expected to lose her hair and Kim wanted some shots before this happened.

Kim, I believe is currently in a hospital in Sydney, with her family surrounding her as the doctors have given a less than positive outlook for Kim. I go to the same church as Kim, and Kim is an amazing encouragement to everyone there. I mean everyone. She would know the names of everyone in the church, or anyone that has visited even once when she was there. She takes a real, keen, and genuine interest in people’s lives and there are hundreds of people out there who rely on her for encouragement and support. Kim has been the most amazing support to me, and to so many people who I am close to. I used to live with Alex, her son, and was so glad to have her visit.

Kim is a very strong, committed Christian. I know that it would be her prayer that you would come to know the joy and peace she knows. I think Kim knew all too well that there was a major reason that people visited churches but often didn’t go back. Because of the sucky people that are at church who can’t really help you and are just so caught up in themselves. I am one of those people, but I believe Kim isn’t. She knows how to make someone welcome, and to show them that she cares and is glad that they’re around.

Folks, people let us down. God doesn’t. He never will. He will never leave us.

My prayer for you is that you cannot stop thinking about the future, where you’re going.. what’s after this.. you know all that stuff.. and you find God at the end of it, waiting with open arms, wanting to be there for you if only you’ll open your arms too.

Please say a prayer, even if you’ve never prayed before, say a prayer for Kim and her family, but also for yourself and your longing to get to know the God of this universe.

I don’t know if I’ve really set to achieve what I intented to get across in this blog post..but I hope and pray that you have been challenged and encouraged by something in this. If anyone wants to chat, either to tell me I’m full of it, or to find out more, or to just have a chat.. my inbox and mobile are both open and both are published all over my main website (www.jamesday.com.au)

I’ll leave you with a photo from the family shoot that I did of Kim and her gorgeous family a few months back.

da Innenet.

I love the internet. I also hate the internet. It allows you to connect with the world.. it also allows you to waste a heck of alot of time.
I thought i’d share with you some websites which I check out often… and waste so much of my time…
Firstly, I regularly check out The Beckers Blog. I’d dare say he’s probably the most well known wedding photographer these days and he’s become known for his Relaxed Portraits, Real Moments and Amazing Details. He’s also known for his [b] logo which pops up everywhere. He’s based in Southern California, or SoCal, as they like to call it over there. We’ve had a bit of contact recently, and I might be going to L.A. at some point this year to do some work with him.

Secondly, his girlfriend and probably the most lovable photographer world wide, Jessica Claire’s blog is always open whenever [b]’s is. Jessica’s photography is probably some of the best you’ll ever see..

3. The news. Um, just coz I like to know what’s going on.

4. The Digital Wedding Forum. Alot of you know me for my craziness.. and I think the guys from the DWF are sometimes inspiration for that. Some of the crazy stuff that they get up to is just insane. Setting a wedding dress on fire is common practice. Basically the DWF is a group of thousands of the best photogs in the world coming together to share ideas and inspire each other.

5. My Blog. I often find myself reading my own blog to get inspiration from myself before I go ot do a shoot. Is that weird? I quite like reading my blog actually.. I was having a conversation with Lauren the other day about how many people read it and how strange I find it. There are all these people who I don’t know who know all this stuff about me. I can’t even go to the supermarket without someone saying something about it.

6. Ebay I’m actually selling something on ebay at the moment. It’s a signed photo of the 1999 Cricket World Cup Final where Australia Defeated Sith Efreeka! It’s probably the most prized autographed thing in my collection, but I thought it was time to part with it. Check it out here - BID ON JAMES’ STUFF. It would make a bloody good present for someone. Go bid on it.. and help me go to Canada in 9 days. Oh yeah, mum, I’m going to Canada, sorry I forgot to tell you. And Yes, I’m going to see Lauren. I’m not sure exactly where the money is coming from at this stage.. i’m sure i’ll sort that out though. Anyone who’d like to blow my mind and donate money is thoroughly welcome. (ok, a blog reader Kerry who I was speaking with last night dared me to write this. I’m expecting her to donate now)

Well that’s all folks. I’ll work on some images to post later in the day.
